Park Place School is located in the Park Place section of Norfolk, Virginia. Our mission is to provide at-risk elementary school students from low-income backgrounds the basic reading, spelling and math skills necessary for academic success, within a Judeo-Christian environment. Students, ages eight to twelve who have difficulty learning and who read below grade level are candidates for admission.
Psycho-educational assessments of Park Place School students indicate that many do not meet eligibility criteria for special education in the public system. Yet, they continue to fall further and further behind their classmates in the critical areas of reading, writing and math. Currently, ten of our sixteen students have been retained once and two have been retained twice. In addition, many have an undiagnosed learning disability that requires special teaching methods.
The goal of Park Place School is to sufficiently strengthen the
academic skills of at-risk students, to enable them to return to
public school in the sixth grade armed with the tools to succeed,
and to graduate from high school. Our methods of educational
instruction are based upon the intervention of NILD. Intervention
equips students to be independent thinkers motivated to learn. Hope
and success are restored.
The Park Place School model utilize the computer aided A+ Advanced Learning System daily for Social Studies and Science. This software addresses the academic Standards of Learning (SOL) for the state of Virginia. Park Place School does not require SOL testing, however we prepare our curriculum to align with the Standards of Learning (SOL).
DevelopmentThis year the team of educators utilize current research and curricula to develop a code of conduct to address moral development and social skills. Character notebooks, role-playing and problem solving strategies are used to instill the following character traits self-government, honesty, attentiveness, responsibility and perseverance.

Park Place School offers SOL instruction, homework and reading assistance in our after school program. The after school program operates from 3:30pm - 5:00pm Monday - Thursday.
